It's another big summer movie weekend and this year has been rather interesting as far as the summer blockbusters. For the most part, the big movies of 2014 have been received very well by critics, if not the movie-going public. That is true again this week. There are two big movies opening this weekend, one of them a very adult comedy sequel and the other a sequel to a beloved kids animated movie.
Here are the movies opening June 13, 2014:
22 Jump Street - Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube. A few years back Hill wrote and helped produce the first movie 21 Jumpe Street, which was an adaptation of a TV show about adult cops pretending to be students to bust bad guys. Rather than taking the serious approach that the TV show had, the movie was an outright comedy. The movie ended up being a huge success. Now, the two leads (Hill and Tatum) are back and have to go undercover at a local college to bust drug dealers. So far, critics are saying that this one manages to do what many consider impossible: be as funny as the first movie. In fact, most critics are saying this one might be actually better than the original. Rated R.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 - Djimon Hounsou, Jay Baruchel, Kristen Wiig. The first movie was based on a beloved series of children's books and became a huge hit. It was a hit critically and in the theaters, and then really became a monster hit on home video. Now, Hiccup is back with his dragon Toothless as a Viking who has taught the rest of his Viking clan to embrace and befriend dragons. This time there is a threat headed for the Vikings of the first movie who want to take their dragons for himself. Toothless and Hiccup set out on their own to find help in defeating this new threat and protect their way of life. The plot may sound simple, but critics are saying that this movie builds off the first, is exciting, beautifully animated, worth the price of 3D, and even emotionally resonant. This could be the biggest family film of the summer. Rated PG.
