There’s sure to be plenty of smiles and chuckles on the faces of players before they tee off tomorrow in round one of the Ottawa Sun Scramble’s Absolute Comedy C Division at Dragonfly Golf Links.

And it’s just as likely that those grins will vanish during the four hours plus of play when the golfers bear down and try to grind out passage into round two on Championship Saturday at Outaouais Golf Club.

“The top 14 teams making the cut move on to compete on Aug. 23 at Outaouais and the 28 players each receive a complementary ClubEG membership,” said Andy Rajhathy, vice president of ClubEG, the virtual golf club that organizes and runs the Ottawa area’s largest tournament.

When the champs are crowned they’ll pop a couple of bottle caps and hoist the Absolute Comedy Cup before receiving an exemption and complementary entry into the event’s Promomedia B Division next year.

Rajhathy says all players in the Absolute Comedy C Division will score a complementary round of indoor golf (courtesy of Golf-O-Max on Baxter Road), a complementary ticket for Absolute Comedy on Preston Street and teams that miss the cut pick up a free round of golf in 2014 from ClubEG.

The Absolute Comedy C Division players will be teeing off from the white markers at Dragonfly toward a par-72 track measuring 6,002 yards. The course’s diversity scores high on the challenge meter because the front nine is a links-style layout and the back nine demands that shots settle in the right spots.

Last year’s champions were Matthew deVroome of North Bay and Mark McDonald of Gatineau. The duo posted a 7-under 137 to claim the title. This year they’re in the Promomedia B Division.

The Absolute Comedy C Division accepts players carrying scoring averages between 92 and 99 or Golf Canada handicap factors between 17.0 and 24.9.
