Both the Drexel men's and women's basketball teams were on the road on Thursday, and both teams squeezed out single-digit wins over conference foes. Senior guard Renee Johnson-Allen led the women's team (20-7, 13-3 CAA) to a 58-49 win over Georgia State with her first career double-double and sophomore guard Damion Lee poured in a career-high 34 points in a 81-77 win at Old Dominion.
Johnson-Allen tied a career-high with 12 rebounds, which she set just this past Sunday against William & Mary, and complemented that mark with 10 points. Senior guard Hollie Mershon led all scorers with 23 points and now stands alone in tenth-place on the all-time Drexel scoring list. Freshman guard Meghan Creighton, who is the reigning CAA Rookie of the Week, knocked down a team-high four three-pointers to give her 12 points for the game.
The Dragons were up by one point in the first half, but Georgia State scored the first five points of the second half to go up by four. But Drexel turned it on with a run of their own, scoring 17 straight points to provide a big enough cushion to hold off a late Panther comeback.
On the men's side, Lee had 24 of his 34 points in the first half and the Dragons (12-17, 8-9 CAA) led 41-29 at the break. But ODU kept fighting back and tied the game at 53 apiece with about ten minutes remaining in the game. But Lee made some big shots down the stretch and Drexel was able to hold off the feisty Monarchs.
Guards Frantz Massenat and Derrick Thomas both scored in double-figures with 22 and 13 points, respectively, and they each dished out six assists. With Drexel big men Daryl McCoy and Kazembe Abif limited by foul trouble, Lee picked up the slack down low and led the team in rebounds with 10.
Both Drexel teams are back in action this weekend with the men at home Saturday night against UNC Wilmington for Senior Night and the women on the road at Delaware on Sunday afternoon.
