Dragon's Maze Buy-a-Box promo card: Render Silent

Gatecrash may have just been released, but it's by no means too early for a little bit of exciting Dragon's Maze news. And now, straight from Wizards, we have the name of one of the cards to be printed in the third set of the Return to Ravnica block. This press release tells us that the Buy-a-Box promo card, for those who preorder a booster box of Dragon's Maze, is named Render Silent.

Speculation in the MTGSalvation rumor mill thread that broke the news has already run rampant. Since the Return to Ravnica Buy-a-Box promo, Supreme Verdict, was Azorius-affiliated white and blue multicolor, and the one for Gatecrash, Nightveil Specter, was Dimir blue/black hybrid, that nearly rules out the two guilds that the name Render Silent make the most sense with. The Azorius can hand out legal gag orders, and the Dimir render their enemies silent with things like assassination, but since Wizards probably doesn't want to get accused of favoring one guild over another, then neither of these guilds will get yet-another promo card. That leaves the third-most-likely guild, Orzhov, as the most likely candidate for Render Silent. After all, silence is the respectful thing to do in church.

As for what the card actually does, there's a somewhat broad range of effects that it could have. In a partially-blue guild, it'd most likely be a counterspell; but the name does not feel like either an Izzet or a Simic guild (it's honestly not mad-sciency) enough. So since Orzhov is left with it, it may well be either a white-black multicolor enchantment or simply a monocolor enchantment with extort.

Here's my best guess for what Render Silent may look like, combining all the theories of about how it will work:

Render Silent 3W

Enchantment - Aura (Rare)

Enchant player

Extort

3: Counter target spell enchanted player cast unless he or she pays 1.

"Insolence does not suit a servitor." - Vuliev of the Ghost Council

What do you think Render Silent will do? Let me know in the comments.
