Players will be able to choose the gender of their character in Dragon Age: Inquisition in addition to the protagonist’s race and class. Since the series is set in a fantasy world with themes similar to our own medieval period of history, some fans are worried if NPC figures from the game will treat the Inquisitor differently depending upon their in-game gender choice. Putting those fears to rest, Dragon Age Creative Director Mike Laidlaw revealed on April 16 that the citizens of Thedas are open-minded when it comes to women rights so discrimination shouldn’t be something that comes up.

Bioware is familiar with giving fans their choice of which gender they want the protagonists of their various franchises to be. Both previous Dragon Age games as well as all three Mass Effect titles have allowed players to decide the sex of the main character. This trend will continue in Dragon Age: Inquisition and will likely be seen in many of the developer’s future creations.

While specific characters may be love interests to different genders, how the Inquisitor is treated won’t be affected by their sex. Instead, players are far more likely to be judged based upon their in-game actions. Laidlaw doesn’t feel that gender will have too large of an impact on NPC reactions. The game’s creative director gave the following statement about the topic.

People in the Dragon Age world generally don't mind women in positions of power, so I don't see why that would be an issue.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is currently scheduled to release this fall on Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. Fans of the series will once again be able to play as their choice of different fantasy races in the franchise’s next installment. While Dragon Age: Origins also allowed gamers to choose their character’s race, Dragon Age 2 only gave fans the option to play as a human. Furthermore, Dragon Age: Inquisition gives more options for racial choice than ever before since players will be able to be qunari in addition to humans, elves, or dwarves.
