It's almost but not too late to get tickets to Peaches Christ's production of "Paris Is Burning," Saturday night at 8pm at the Castro Theatre.
It's more than a screening as only Peaches can do. She's got very special guest Latrice Royale, a fan favorite from "RuPaul's Drag Race" as well as an actual ball and contests.
Peaches and Latrice hold court, celebrating the most seminal drag documentary ever made. Join Latrice, the ultimate drag mom, as Ms. Royale schools the children of San Francisco at the night's Drag 101 Class. Many lessons will be taught but most importantly Ms. Royale promises to teach you how to read! (Look it up in the urban dictionary.)
The pre-show extravaganza kicks off with a very special live performance from the legendary Latrice followed by a special presentation starring some of the Bay Area’s vogue luminaries in the underground local ball scene. Celebrity judges rate realness and more for a trophy awarded to the house most deserving.
Dress up if you plan to go as during the Ball, the following categories will be judged: Runway Couture, Butch Queen in Pumps, and Vogue Femme. Commentary will be provided by legendary Ball queen Anita Khan! Celebrity Judges will include Latrice Royale, Jocquese (Vogue & Tone), U-Phoria, and Mister David.
Music throughout the evening’s events will be provided by Josh Cheon of Honey Soundsystem, and prepared to be floored by a special performance from Double Duchess!
Following the pre-show ball, the film screens on the Castro Theatre’s gigantic screen. The film is an unblinking behind the scenes story of fashion obsessed New Yorkers who created “voguing” and drag balls , and turned these raucous celebrations into a powerful expression of personal pride. The world within a world is instantly familiar, filled with ambitions, desires and yearnings that reflect America itself. It is an intimate portrait of one urban community, a world in which the allure of high fashion, status and wealth becomes an affirmation of love, acceptance and joy.

This weekend also has the continuation of "Pageant" - a drag musical spoof about beauty contests in which selected audience members get to pick the winners. There was a three way tie the night I saw it but I've heard there's been some consistent winners over the past few weeks. But the real winner is the audience. It's fun and jovial - just the break we need from our own sorted lives. It ends its limited run Saturday, March 9 at 8pm at the Victoria Theatre. Also, Jason Brock may be gone from "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" but brilliant director still gets amazing performances from his ensemble cast - no matter how famous they are. Filling in Brock's pumps, J. Conrad Frank has joined the show. Frank is known to many as Katya Smirnoff Skyy but I will always remember him as Joan Crawford in the hilarious, brilliant dragged up "Baby Jane?" Come see Frank and a frankly wonderful cast in the cabaret-set musical "Hedwig" at the Boxcar Theatre.
There's also the return of Michelle Ianiro to "Hedwig" this week. Ianiro was in the show previously but left for another commitment. She's back and I bet with a vengeance. It will be excited to see her again as she's impressed me in everything she does - from her small but memorable role in "9 to 5" to directing "Bound by Blood."
If you happen to be walking around Natoma Street near curtain time Friday at 8pm or Saturday at 5pm or 8pm and they have an unsold seat, it's only $10!
