A British newspaper is reporting that Alex Kingston's mysterious "River Song" character is likely to be killed off in an upcoming episode of DR. WHO.

Less than a week after stories surfaced that the Doctor's companion Amy Pond (played by Karen Gillan) might be exiting the show, London's The Daily Star quotes an insider who claims that while Gillan's immediate future is secure on the show, Kingston's character might be facing an untimely death.

"It's news to us. As far as we're concerned she [Karen Gillan] is set to appear in all 13 episodes. It's River Song who's for the axe," said the insider.

Kingston's character first appeared in the 2008 DR WHO episode "Silence In The Library" and during that episode let it slip that she is the Doctor's wife, although the marriage apparently happens in some future timeline.

River Song made two appearances in the hit series earlier this year, and in the season final, she teased that she would return. She said: “Then you will learn the truth about me and everything will change.”

The new season of DR. WHO won't air until 2011, when six new episodes will air in the Spring and another seven will air in the late summer.
