Dr. Travis Stork reveals how 12 people lost a total of 2,500 pounds

In an era where shows such as "The Biggest Loser" reward rapid extreme weight loss measures, we sometimes overlook the fact that slow, steady weight loss can pay off. On the Feb. 10 episode of "The Doctors," host Dr. Travis Stork featured a group of 12 men and women who took that route. The result of their efforts: They lost a total of 2,500 pounds.

The episode is noteworthy for ranking as the most successful weight loss transformations in the show's history, said Dr. Stork. Although the group of 12 came from different backgrounds and had different stories, they all struggled with their weight and had diet downfalls that Dr. Stork says typifies the reasons for obesity in America.

Some examples:

  • One woman of two weighed 272 pounds at her highest and confessed that she fed her children as well as herself two to three fast food meals on a daily basis.
  • Another dieter in the group admitted that he consumed 5,000 to 6,000 calories daily - and more than 2,000 calories came from sugary soda.
  • A third woman turned to food for comfort, using fattening treats to ease anxiety and stress.

But what they all had in common: They used carefully planned diets and succeeded in achieving their weight loss goals. Dr. Stork's message to others who are currently facing their own battles of the bulge: For your health, you can learn to overcome obstacles and shed your excess pounds.

Dr. Stork cited these statistics:

  • Two out of three Americans are overweight or obese.
  • More people die of weight-related health complications than from car accidents, drug abuse, smoking and gun violence combined.

The plan that he developed to overcome America's obesity epidemic is detailed in his new book, "The Doctor's Diet: Dr. Travis Stork's STAT Program to Help You Lose Weight & Restore Your Health" (click for details).

Dr. Stork used the term STAT because in emergency medicine it means immediate treatment is needed. As a result, his book takes dieters through phases of learning to use food as medicine. Also included are recipes.

One key message from the book: Never eat a meal without protein in it. The reason: Protein keeps you satisfied while preventing blood sugar spikes.
