Dr. Travis prescribes 'The Doctor’s Diet' for weight loss: Lasagna recipe

Possibly the sexiest doctor on television, Dr. Travis Stork is an emergency room physician who became famous for his stint on "The Bachelor." Now the impeccably fit celebrity physician hosts the health talk show "The Doctors," and, as he revealed on the Dec. 10 episode, he's authored a new diet book designed to help you win at weight loss: "The Doctor's Diet: Dr. Travis Stork's STAT Program to Help You Lose Weight & Restore Your Health" (click for details).

Dr. Travis designed the program to appeal to the two out of three Americans who are overweight or obese. As evidence that obesity is a dangerous epidemic, he noted that more people die due to weight-related health complications than from car accidents, drug abuse, smoking and gun violence combined.

There are so many diet books out there: What makes "The Doctor's Diet" different?

"You can actually use food as your medicine and enjoy it, and lose a lot of weight," explained Dr. Travis.

The plan is designed to provide you with three different plans. It begins with STAT: A 14-day jump-start plan. You'l then move to the Restore plan, to keep you shedding pounds. After that comes Maintain, designed to help you continue your success from the initial weight loss diets.

Included are recipes and workout information, both of which are designed to keep the emphasis on flexibility and simplicity. Dr. Travis emphasizes that food can be used to heal without sacrificing the flavor or fun.

"Every single food we eat in our lives can be made tastier and healthier," notes Dr. Travis, using the lasagna recipe below as an example.

Ingredients:
• 16 ounces low-fat cottage cheese
• 1 bag fresh spinach
• 1 egg
• 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
• Black pepper to taste
• Olive oil cooking spray
• 8 ounces whole-wheat lasagna noodles, uncooked
• 1 cup marinara sauce
• ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. In a bowl, mix cottage cheese, spinach, egg, and red and black pepper.
3. Spritz a baking dish with cooking spray.
4. Spread out half the lasagna noodles.
5. Cover with the cheese/spinach filling; top with the remaining noodles.
6. Pour marinara sauce over the noodles; sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Bake for 45-50 minutes.
Optional: To cut down on carbs, skip the bottom layer of noodles.
