If you have ever seen an episode of Dr. Phil then you know that he is known for not beating around the bush and getting down to reality. Generally speaking most people either love Dr. Phil or hate him and each group will have their own compelling reasons for doing so. Being that Dr. Phil appears to be a highly educated, no non-sense man, you might expect that he would also be mindful of his words. However, in the episode titled “Love, Lies and Murder: Killer Doctor's Daughter Reacts to Mistress Interview,” that aired on December 2, 2013, Dr. Phil shows anything but that mindfulness and level of knowledge that we expect from him. His comments have insulted and outraged the Pagan community world wide and many are asking for a public apology.
In watching clips from the show it is clear to see that Dr. Phil does not know a single thing about Paganism or the form of Paganism known as Wicca. It seems that Dr. Phil, being the educated man that he is, would have done a bit of research prior to the show but it is clear that he did not. This leaves many people, especially Pagans, who once looked at Dr. Phil as a no non-sense man that was out to help others now viewing him as a close minded person who doesn’t represent anything except his own close minded beliefs.
The comments that really set the Pagan community off happened when Dr. Phil used a very negative, uneducated and ignorant statement. While Dr. Phil was talking to Alexis he said “was she what’s known as a Wiccan Priestess?” and Alexis replied in saying, “that’s what I’ve been told,” to which Dr. Phil replies in saying “what the hell is that?” To make things worse the tone that he used was very bad as well. A letter has been emailed to the Dr. Phil show to see if there is anything that they would like to say about these comments.
