Dr. Oz warns antibiotics make you fat; avoid sugar for weight loss and health

Most of us have taken antibiotics for various illnesses. But did you know that these commonly prescribed medications can cause weight gain - and that you may be consuming them in your food? On his April 7 talk show, Dr. Mehmet Oz explained why he's calling antibiotics the "fat drug." Plus: Find out how avoiding sugar can boost your health and weight loss.

Dr. Oz talked about the link between antibiotics and weight gain with his guest expert Dr. Martin Blaser, author of "Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues" (click for details). Antibiotics are commonly given to chicken to cause them to be plump. When Dr. Blaser tested that use on mice, he discovered that they gained 15 percent more weight.

In addition, antibiotics cause food cravings, change your metabolism and even cause your body to manufacture more fat cells, warns Dr. Blaser.

What to do: If you need an antibiotic, take a probiotic supplement at the same time. For the best benefits, consume the probiotics for two weeks.

Also on this episode, Dr. Oz featured a woman who successfully halted all sugar intake for a full year. And Eve Schaub didn't limit her avoidance to herself: She included her entire family in the no-sugar ban. Now she's authored a book about it: "Year of No Sugar: A Memoir."

Eve told Dr. Oz that she and her family successfully changed their fondness for sugary foods. She also came up with some recipes to help. Among the benefits of kicking your sugar habit:

  • Weight loss
  • Reduced risk of diabetes
  • Lower risk of conditions such as cancer
