Dr. Oz: Vitamin D benefits, hidden corn sensitivity, anti-aging copper power

On his March 17 talk show, Dr. Mehmet Oz teamed up with weatherman Sam Champion to reveal the secrets of vitamin D. Vitamin D has been shown to battle cancer, prevent depression and even help with weight loss, according to Dr. Oz. He's concerned that most people don't get enough vitamin D in their diet.

Sam Champion specializes in studying the weather, and he talked with Dr. Oz about how sun exposure can boost your level of vitamin D. Because many areas do not offer enough sun year-round to maintain healthy levels, he and Dr. Oz also discussed the benefits of supplements.

Dr. Mike Roizen talked with Dr. Oz about new food label changes. Co-author with Dr. Oz of "YOU: On A Diet Revised Edition: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management" (click for details), Dr. Roizen noted that the FDA is in the process of improving food labels.

For now, however, Dr. Roizen cautions to read labels carefully. The information about serving sizes, for example, and amount of saturated fat can be deceiving, so make sure to understand just how much is in one serving size rather than assuming that an entire box of a product has the number of calories and amount of saturated fat shown on the label.

Although wheat allergies and gluten-free diets have been in the news recently, Dr. Oz says that many people may also suffer from hidden corn sensitivity. Symptoms include brain fog, bloating, skin rashes and joint pain. To determine if you might have this condition, try eliminating corn from your diet for two weeks.

Corn can be hidden in many foods, so look for the following ingredients on the labels: Alpha tocopherol, Calcium stearate, cellulose, cornmeal, cornstarch and corn syrup. Learn more about elimination diets by clicking here.

On the same episode, Dr. Oz highlighted the anti-aging power of copper with dermatologist Dr. Jeannette Graf. She explained that copper supports your collagen.
