A dangerous new diet fad is becoming increasingly popular: Smoking alcohol. But this zero-calorie way to get high poses serious health risks, revealed Dr. Mehmet Oz on his March 6 talk show. Plus: Discover easy ways to boost your memory. And discover why pistachios are the best nuts for weight loss.
Smoking alcohol appeals to those who want to get high without hangovers or weight gain. But the Vaportini, as it's sometimes called, puts you at risk for alcohol overdoses, warns Dr. Oz. Because it takes effect so quickly, you can overdo it easily without realizing you may be poisoning yourself. Moreover, if you're using this method to get high regularly, you are at risk for becoming addicted.
On this same episode, Dr. Oz talked about memory boosters with guest expert Dr. Majid Fotuhi, author of "The Memory Cure : How to Protect Your Brain Against Memory Loss and Alzheimer's Disease" (click for details).
Dr. Fotuhi suggests the following ways to improve your memory and protect your brain:
- Practice memorization with lists such as grocery shopping.
- Learn to dance to cross-train your brain.
- Take 600 to 900 mg of DHA daily to reduce your risk of Alzheimer's and sharpen your mental abilities.
In addition, Dr. Oz cracked open the topic of pistachios. High in protein, pistachios burn fat faster than other nuts while reducing your cholesterol and battling inflammation. They're also high in fiber and potassium.
Use pistachios for weight loss with these Oz-approved tips:
- Choose unsalted pistachios.
- Aim for one ounce of pistachios daily (about 50 nuts).
