Dr. Mehmet Oz slammed a dangerous weight-loss trend that could lead to alcohol poisoning on the June 18 episode of the Dr. Oz Show ("Smoking Alcohol: The Dangerous New Way to Get Drunk").
Dr. Oz said "smoking alcohol" is an alarming new way to get drunk without consuming the calories you get from drinking alcohol. Some women claim smoking alcohol helps with weight loss and gives them a buzz without a hangover.
The way it works is this: You pour alcohol into a round glass and put that over another glass that has a lit candle in it. The heat from the candle heats up the alcohol in the round glass.
You use a straw and inhale deeply, hold the vapors in your lungs for a few seconds and then exhale. This is called a "Vaportini" in nightclubs. Women like it because they can get drunk without the calories.
Smoking Alcohol Made Oz Dizzy and Drunk
As an experiment, Dr. Oz tried smoking alcohol himself, and got dizzy and drunk within 20 minutes. Afterward, he failed a breathalyzer test, and his blood alcohol was above the legal limit.
Dr. Oz's guest was addiction expert Brad Lamm, who said inhaling vaporized alcohol can have five times the alcohol impact that drinking does. When you drink too much alcohol, your body tries to get rid of it by causing you to vomit, explained Lamm, author of the weight-loss book, Just 10 Lbs. But when you smoke alcohol, there's no way for your body to get rid of the excess, leading to alcohol poisoning.
Smoking alcohol is easier to overdo than drinking booze (since there are physical limits to how much you can drink), so it's a slippery slope to alcohol addiction. Lamm, who also wrote How to Help the One You Love, is concerned that people might think they're not drunk after smoking alcohol and then get behind the wheel of a car when, in fact, they are too drunk to drive.

On a separate segment of his show, Dr. Oz spoke with neurologist Dr. Majid Fotuhi about how to boost memory. Dr. Fotuhi, author of Boost Your Brain, said we all experience some memory loss as we get older because the brain shrinks with age.
Dr. Fotuhi, a leading expert on memory loss and Alzheimer's disease, said memory is like a muscle: Use it or lose it. You can dramatically prevent memory loss by being physically active (being a couch potato has been shown to accelerate memory loss) and doing the following:
- Memorize long lists. The memory is like a muscle, so the more you exercise it, the stronger it gets.
- Try new things. Dr. Oz said doing new things, like learning the cha-cha or writing with your left hand (if you're right-handed) stimulates your brain.
- DHA memory supplement. Dr. Oz said DHA has been shown to increase blood flow to the brain, enhance memory, and prevent Alzheimer's.
Dr. Oz said pistachios are a great weight-loss snack because they're low-carb, fight inflammation, suppress appetite, and lower cholesterol.
Dr. Oz said instead of snacking on pretzels or chips, you should enjoy an ounce of unsalted pistachios (or about 50) every day. Research has shown that people who eat nuts are thinner and live longer.
