Dr. Oz reveals gluten allergy symptoms and best protein powders for weight loss

Dr. Mehmet Oz discussed the symptoms of gluten allergy on the Feb. 18 episode of the Dr. Oz Show ("The 5 Hidden Signs You Have a Gluten Allergy").

Dr. Oz said many people suffer from gluten sensitivity or allergy and aren't aware of it, mistakenly believing their weight gain, migraines, or depression is due to other health problems.

"Gluten allergy symptoms are notoriously difficult to recognize because they sneak up on you," he said.

Dr. Oz's guest was Dr. Amy Myers, an expert on gluten sensitivity. Dr. Myers said about 55 different diseases are associated with gluten intolerance and as many as one in two people unknowingly suffer from gluten sensitivity.

The symptoms of gluten allergy include:

  1. Weight gain
  2. Irregular bowels (gas, constipation or diarrhea)
  3. Skin rash
  4. Joint pain
  5. Brain fog.

Dr. Myers said a gluten allergy attacks your immune system, which causes chronic inflammation and weight gain.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat and other grain products and is what gives bread its chewy texture. Gluten is used in a surprising number of foods, such as soy sauce, bacon bits, blue cheese, beer and flavored coffee.

Fortunately, eliminating gluten from your diet can immediately cure gluten sensitivity. As a side benefit, many people who stop eating gluten experience weight loss. On previous episodes of the Dr. Oz Show, neurologist Dr. David Perlmutter and cardiologist Dr. William Davis discussed the many health benefits of a gluten-free diet.

Dr. Perlmutter, author of Grain Brain, said a low-carb, gluten-free diet prevents dementia and Alzheimer's, while Dr. Davis, author of Wheat Belly, said it promotes weight loss and reverses diabetes and heart disease.

Best Protein Powders For Weight Loss

Dr. Oz said protein powders are a great weight-loss tool, but warned that some brands contain more calories than listed on their labels, and are even contaminated with lead.

Dr. Oz's guest was Dr. Tod Cooperman, president of Consumer Lab, which tested 16 popular protein powders. The results showed that some brands contain less protein and more carbs and calories than stated on their labels, which is horrible news for those are interested in weight loss.
