Dr. Mehmet Oz continued his week-long focus on summer weight loss by revealing natural tips to boost fat burning on Wednesday's episode of the Dr. Oz Show.
Now that swimsuit season is around the corner, everyone is clamoring for ways to slim down quickly. Fortunately, there are natural, inexpensive secrets to boost calorie-burning and flush fat.
Vitamin C, Green Tea and Vinegar
Vitamin C. Studies show adding vitamin C to your diet boosts metabolism and enhances fat loss, so eat more broccoli, strawberries, kiwi, lemons and grapefruit.
Litamine. Dr. Oz, author of YOU: Losing Weight, said a new supplement called Litramine aids weight loss by binding to fat and excreting it out of your body.
Green tea. Another way to enhance weight loss is to drink green tea. Green tea contains EGCG, an antioxidant that has been shown to burn fat and protect against the free-radical damage that promotes aging and disease. Dr. Oz said drinking two cups of green tea a day can help you burn more fat. Studies show green tea also reduces your risks of getting heart disease and cancer.
White vinegar. Drinking two tablespoons of white vinegar after every meal helps your body burn fat and stabilizes blood sugar. Studies show vinegar reduce the blood sugar spikes you experience after you eat sugary foods or refined carbs.
On a separate segment, Dr. Oz's guest was Kellyann Petrucci, author of the Paleo Cookbook for Dummies. The Paleo diet is the most popular diet today, and has a huge celebrity following, including Tim McGraw, supermodel Adriana Lima, and actress Megan Fox.
Proponents say the low-carb Paleo diet accelerates weight loss, lowers blood pressure, and prevents cancer, diabetes, heart disease, depression, and even Alzheimer's.
Research shows the Paleo diet works well for women because it reduces the blood sugar spikes and hormone surges that fuel overeating, mood swings and weight gain, said Esther Blum, author of Cavewomen Don't Get Fat.
One thing Paleo dieters miss is eating bread, which is not allowed on the grain-free eating plan. But Kellyann said you can enjoy these low-carb bread options that give you the "comfort food" aspect of bread at a fraction of the carbs:
- Ezekiel bread. Ezekiel sprouted grain bread is high in fiber and low in carbs.
- Coconut flour. You can bake your own low-carb bread at home using coconut flour, an excellent non-grain source of fiber that aids digestion and helps you absorb more vitamins and minerals.
- Flaxseed bread. This nutrient-dense wheat- and cholesterol-free bread curbs hunger and promotes healthy digestion.
