Dr. Oz: Fast Metabolism diet promotes 20-pound weight loss in 28 days

Dr. Mehmet Oz discussed metabolism-boosting diet tips to enhance weight loss on Wednesday's episode of the Dr. Oz Show. Dr. Oz's guest was celebrity nutritionist Haylie Pomroy, whose clients include Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, and Robert Downey Jr.

Pomroy said you can rev up your metabolism and accelerate weight loss by switching up your diet every two or three days. This confuses your body so it burns more calories. Recent studies suggest alternating calorie intake is better for weight loss than eating the same amount of calories every day.

Another way to boost your metabolism is to make sure you don't under-eat. Dr. Oz said one of the biggest mistake dieters make is to starve themselves, which only ends up slowing down your metabolism, resulting in less weight loss. When you drastically cut calories, your body compensates by reducing your metabolism.

Pomroy said eating enough protein and healthy fats also help your body burn more fat. Her suggestions echo recent scientific findings indicating that a high-protein diet effectively promotes weight loss by suppressing appetite. According to a new study from the University of Sydney, baboons who consumed a high-protein diet maintained their weight even when they ate more calories, underscoring the weight loss benefits of protein.

The latest study confirms similar research published in the biology journal, FASEB, which monitored 39 adults on a calorie-restricted diet with varying levels of protein. After 31 days, the group that consumed twice the recommended daily amount of protein lost more weight than the low-protein group while maintaining lean muscle mass.

Finally, one proven way to ensure a faster metabolism is to exercise. While cardio exercise burns a lot of calories, strength-training exercises like weight-lifting may better enhance weight loss by helping you build lean muscle mass. The more lean muscle you have, the higher your resting metabolic rate will be, say fitness experts, so you burn more calories even when you sleep.
