Dr. Oz said your diet could be causing a toxic acid overload and revealed how an alkaline-food diet promotes weight loss on the Jan. 13 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.
"These foods create this toxic acid that's putting you at risk for diabetes, kidney damage, and weight gain," said Dr. Oz.
Dr. Oz's guest was dietitian Ashley Koff, author of Mom Energy: A Simple Plan to Live Fully Charged. Koff said we all need to eat more alkaline-promoting foods and less acid-forming foods to enjoy effortless weight loss and prevent disease.
Dr. Oz said whether a food is acidic or alkaline doesn't have to do with taste, but with its effect inside your body. For example, lemon tastes acidic, but it has a completely alkaline effect once you ingest it.
The Alkaline diet has been shown to produce weight loss, which is why super-skinny celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham and Jennifer Aniston have embraced it. Koff said there are three groups of foods that are acid-producing and cause toxic acid overload:
- Refined carbs such as flour and pasta.
- High-fat dairy such as butter and cheese.
- Animal proteins such as red meat and poultry.
In contrast, Dr. Oz said the following foods are alkaline-forming and promote good health:
- Acidic fruits like lemons and limes.
- Tropical fruits like papaya and mango.
- Green vegetables such as avocado, celery and parsley.
- Gluten-free grains like quinoa.
- Spices such as cinnamon and ground ginger.
- Lower-acid proteins such as sardines, salmon and tofu.
Dr. Oz suggested following a 2:1 ratio in your diet (eat two or more alkaline foods for every acidic food you consume). A sample menu on the alkaline-food diet looks like this:
- Breakfast. Scrambled eggs (acid-promoting) with spinach (alkaline) and half a grapefruit (alkaline).
- Lunch. Salad greens (alkaline) with slices of roasted turkey meat (acid-promoting) with a homemade avocado-lemon dressing (alkaline).
- Dinner. Salmon patty (alkaline) on half a whole-wheat bun (acid-promoting) with stir-fried veggies (alkaline).
Dr. Oz you don't have to avoid acid-producing foods, but doing the following will neutralize acid:
- Drink a cup of water with lemon before eating an acid-producing food (such as ice cream or chocolate). Doing this will dramatically cut down on acid overload.
- Sip cinnamon tea. Cinnamon tea has a surprising number of health benefits, including promoting weight loss, aiding digestion, and minimizing blood-sugar spikes.
- Sprinkle spices on acidic foods. Excellent alkaline-producing spices include paprika, chili powder, dried parsley and curry powder.
Dr. Oz Reveals the Inflammatory Foods No One is Talking About
In a separate segment, Dr. Oz revealed four surprising foods that can wreak havoc on your metabolism and fuel inflammation:
1. Agave. Dr. Oz has previously recommended this plant-based sweetener, but said agave is pro-inflammatory when you consume too much. Dr. Oz suggested substituting 100% pure maple syrup, which has less fructose and is a good source of zinc and calcium.
2. Vegetable oils. Many vegetable oils (such as corn and sunflower oils) are very inflammatory because of their high omega-6 content. Dr. Oz suggested using extra-virgin olive oil (which has far less omega-6 fatty acids).
4. Frozen yogurt. Regular frozen yogurt contains a lot of sugar, and is extremely inflammatory. Dr. Oz suggested eating frozen Greek yogurt instead, which has less sugar and contains probiotics. Probiotics, which Dr. Oz called the best weight-loss trend of 2013, aid digestion and promote weight loss.
