Dr. Mehmet Oz revealed three natural ways to prevent cancer on Aug. 21 episode of the Dr. Oz Show. Dr. Oz said the keys to dramatically reducing your cancer risk are probably in your kitchen right now.
Dr. Oz's guest was Dr. William Li, president and medical director of the Angiogenesis Foundation. Dr. Li said you can lower your risk of contracting ovarian cancer by a whopping 82 percent by drinking green tea or oolong tea, according to a study done by Curtin University in Australia.
Tea contains flavonoids, which are natural cancer fighters, and green tea and oolong tea contain the highest concentration of flavonoids. Drinking four cups of green or oolong tea (without sugar) can literally kill cancer cells before they start, said Li.
Coffee Is Rich in Antioxidants, Peaches Have Polyphenols
Another way to prevent cancer is to drink coffee, which is rich in antioxidants. Dr. Li said drinking three cups of black coffee a day has been shown to cut your liver cancer risk by 50 percent. Li cited a study done by the Mario Negri Institute in Italy, which showed that the antioxidants in coffee starved liver-cancer cells by cutting off their blood supply.
Coffee also reduces your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. You can drink either caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee, but try to make sure you drink black coffee (without added milk or sugar) to get the full cancer-prevention benefits, said Oz.
Finally, a third, surprising natural way to prevent cancer to eat peaches. Research shows that peaches contain cancer-fighting polyphenols that prevent tumors from developing in your breasts. Dr. Li said eating two servings of peaches every week can cut your breast cancer risk by 40 percent.
According to a study published in Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, giving mice peach extract caused their aggressive cancer cells to commit suicide. Peaches with the most red contain more cancer-fighting compounds, and fresh peaches contained dramatically more cancer-fighting properties than canned peaches.
