Dr. Oz on heartburn

The pain symptoms indicative of heartburn are similar to the pain experienced during a heart attack, warns Dr. Oz. Therefore, it is essential to understand and know the difference because your life could depend on it.

Heartburn or Heart Attack. According to Dr. Oz, heartburn is described as a painful, burning sensation just below the chest area that may move into the throat. The pain generally occurs after eating and often subsides after moving around or pressing against the area. Other heartburn symptoms include burping, difficulty swallowing, and hoarseness. The onset of a heart attack is described as a crushing pressure in the chest that may move towards the back, neck, or arms; shortness of breath, dizziness, and sweating may also accompany the pain of a heart attack. If you are not sure whether you are experiencing severe heartburn or the symptoms of an oncoming heart attack, Dr. Oz recommends seeking immediate medical assistance.

Millions of Americans suffer from severe heartburn, but it is sometimes misdiagnosed. If you have been experiencing and treating the symptoms of heartburn for more than six months, and you have frequent flare-ups, Dr. Oz recommends that you get examined by a doctor to rule out a more serious condition, such as acid reflux disease or esophageal cancer.

Treating Heartburn at Home. Dr. Oz supports the use of chewable antacids to relieve the symptoms of heartburn in people who have occasional flare-ups. Chewable antacids work quickly, are inexpensive, and available over-the-counter. Changing your diet and eating smaller portions of food will also help eliminate heartburn. According to Dr. Oz, beans and ginger tea are effective home remedies for heartburn. There are foods that trigger heartburn, such as tomato based foods, spicy foods, chocolates, and coffee. Reducing the consumption of these foods may help reduce heartburn symptoms. In addition, Dr. Oz suggests sleeping with your head elevated to alleviate your heartburn symptoms.

Medical Treatment for Heartburn. Medical treatment is available for people suffering with severe heartburn. Treatment usually includes prescription drugs or surgery. However, there is the potential for increased side-effects and complications with medical intervention. If you are considering conventional medical treatment for heartburn discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
