Dr. Oz on energy drinks

Dr. Oz warns consumers to be careful of using energy drinks to overcome fatigue. Energy drinks are a $9 billion a year industry, but becoming dependent on them could be hazardous to your health.

According to Dr. Oz, energy drinks have side-effects. “Anything that changes the way you feel, such as energy drinks and medication do have side effects.” Dr. Oz further explained that energy drinks are often high in sugar and caffeine. The FDA does not regulate energy drinks so consumers need to limit their use of these products, which come in the form of bottled or canned drinks, powders, and energy shots.

“Do not take theses products regularly. Use only when you have to,” advised Dr. Oz. Other drinks containing caffeine that seem to boost energy, but eventually cause health problems include soda, tea, espresso, and coffee. “Coffee can affect your ability to lay down memories,’ warned Dr. Oz.

Dr. Oz recommends trying some of his favorite, healthy energy drinks that are cheap and easy to prepare at home. “Yerba Mate tea is my favorite energy drink. You will get the energy without the sugar.” Other home-made energy drinks include sweet spritzes. Simply add lemon and lime to water, or use pineapple with mint leaves to give flavor to water and drink. You will feel energized and provide your body with the water it needs.
