Dr. Oz: Lose 75 pounds in six months by customizing Paleo diet to burn fat fast

Heard of the Paleolithic weight loss plan, sometimes called the caveman diet? Dr. Mehmet Oz says that you can make it work to burn fat faster by customizing the diet so that it's ideal for your own body type. He unveiled the specifics of how you can lose up to 75 pounds in six months on his Feb. 17 talk show.

By tailoring the Paleo diet to your lifestyle and specific body type, Dr. Oz says you can boost your energy and reduce your risk of disease as well as accelerating your weight loss. His guest on how to customize the Paleo diet: Chris Kresser, author of "Your Personal Paleo Code: The 3-Step Plan to Lose Weight, Reverse Disease, and Stay Fit and Healthy for Life" (click for details).

Chris believes that the Paleo diet is the best weight loss plan because you don't have to worry about restricting calories. Focus on natural, unprocessed foods, such as:

  • protein like meat or fish
  • non-starchy vegetables
  • whole foods carbohydrates from root vegetables or fruit
  • healthy fat

Less isn't necessarily more when it comes to weight loss, says Chris. Because the Paleo low carb diet is more satiating per calorie than other diets, you won't struggle with hunger while shedding pounds quickly and safely.

When it comes to customizing the Paleo weight loss plan, match your carbohydrate intake to your activity level. If you're sedentary, a lower intake of carbohydrates can help burn fat faster (Chris suggests seven to fifteen percent of calories in such cases). Do CrossFit or have a physically demanding job? Try 15 to 30 percent of calories to stimulate fat loss.

In addition, personalize the Paleo plan based on your body type. For example, if you crave large amounts of food, Chris recommends emphasizing non-starchy vegetables in unlimited amounts, protein at each meal and healthy fats such as coconut oil.

Do you tend to cheat on diets? If that's your body type, you can follow the Paleo diet by creating a Paleo plate at each meal, and then allowing small "cheats."

Many women in particular cheat at night, says Nell Stephenson, author of "Paleoista: Gain Energy, Get Lean, and Feel Fabulous with the Diet You Were Born to Eat" and co-author of "The Paleo Diet Cookbook: More Than 150 Recipes for Paleo Breakfasts, Lunches, Dinners, Snacks, and Beverages" (click for details).

Nell told Dr. Oz that a Paleo plate should be one-third protein, two-third vegetables, a small amount of healthy fats and a topper of fruit. She's created a variety of recipes that let you feel like you're cheating but are Paleo-friendly, such as the Paleoista Cinnamon Baked Apple recipe below. Nell suggests ending your day with this guilt-free dessert.
