Dr. Mehmet Oz spoke to "Glee" star Lea Michele about her health, beauty and fitness secrets on the July 3 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.
Michele, 27, is doing well these days, almost a year after her boyfriend and co-star, Cory Monteith, died of a tragic drug overdose. Monteith had struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for years and went to rehab several times. Unfortunately, Cory's inner demons got the best of him and he ended up overdosing at age 31 in July 2013.
As a result of her traumatic loss, Lea said managing stress has become more important than ever in her hectic daily life, which means taking care of her physical and emotional health.
Weight Loss Due to Sugar-Free Organic Diet
Michele, a former vegan, makes an effort to follow a sugar-free organic diet, stay connected with her family, and exercise regularly. Michele said she believes having a loving family has shielded her from the pitfalls and pressures of fame and fortune.
Lea, who made headlines after her dramatic 10-pound weight loss in 2011, slammed rumors she was suffering from anorexia, and attributed her weight loss to her hectic "Glee" work schedule, which typically involves 14 to 16 hours of daily rehearsals and dancing.
Michele is a hot young actress in Hollywood now, but said she didn't always feel beautiful or popular. Lea suffered from severe acne as a teen and was self-conscious about her big nose. Despite widespread peer pressure, Michele never got a nose job because her parents always made her feel beautiful just as she was.
“I was one of the only girls in my high school that didn’t get one, and if anybody needed it, I probably did," she told GQ. "But my mom always told me, growing up, ‘Barbra Streisand didn’t get a nose job. You’re not getting a nose job.’ And I didn’t. F— those people."
Michele, who used to follow a vegan diet, doesn't believe in starvation diets, but avoids sugar and processed food. Lea said she used to struggle with acne, but got glowing skin after following a balanced, organic diet and reducing stress.
Lea, who credited dance workouts and yoga for her slender body, said it would be impossible to perform at the level required for her show if she partied every night. "I don't smoke and I don't do drugs," said Lea. "I never have and that’s who I am."
