When Oprah Winfrey began her rise to fame and fortune by setting a goal of becoming a role model for women, she expanded her influence by creating a magazine in addition to her talk show. Fast forward several years. Now the physician whom she mentored, Dr. Mehmet Oz, is adding a new magazine, "The Good Life," to his sphere of influence. He unveiled it to his "Dr. Oz Show" fans and newsletter subscribers on Dec. 19.
Making it clear that he recognizes weight loss has become a hefty factor in his claim to attracting fans, Dr. Oz crafted his introduction by focusing on how his new magazine can help you shed pounds:
"Whether you want to cook easy healthy meals, lose five pounds or sleep eight hours a night, Dr. Oz the good life offers trusted advice from Dr. Oz and his circle of experts to help you achieve your goals. Subscribe now and get a special introductory offer!" encouraged the promotional email blast.
In a Dec. 18 blog, Dr. Oz expanded on his reasons for creating the magazine. And he credits his wife Lisa.
"Very early on my wife, Lisa, told me: 'If you really want to make a big difference, it’s not going to happen inside the hospital. It’s going to happen with what you learn inside the hospital and take outside the hospital.'"
For the past five years, Dr. Oz feels that he's succeeded in providing viewers of his talk show with the latest knowledge about diets, health and emotional well-being.
"Taking the message of health, wellness and good living out of the hospital and direct to you is what we’ve been doing for five years on this show – and now I’m bringing that same mission to my new magazine," he explained.
Among the topics that he plans to cover, in addition to weight loss:
- How to sleep better
- Shop smarter
- Have more energy
- Make healthier choices in the kitchen and supermarket for your family
- Fit in more exercise
- How to live a healthy life.
