Dr. Mehmet Oz discussed how to survive a fire and revealed Ayurvedic diet and digestion secrets for weight loss and health on the Aug. 27 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.

Dr. Oz said his today's show could literally save your life if a fire starts in your home. His guest was reporter Elisabeth Leamy of Consumer Reports, who said the biggest misconception most people have is that they'll have plenty of time to evacuate their house in case a fire erupts.

Leamy said this is false because most houses today burn a lot faster because furniture is made from fast-burning artificial materials. Temperatures in a burning house can reach 500 degrees in four minutes, and 1,000 degrees within eight minutes. About 60 to 80 percent of fire victims end up dying from smoke or gas inhalation, not from burns, so getting out of your house immediately is critical.

Dr. Oz said you should have a fire escape plan, that includes drawing a floor plan of your house or apartment. For every room, you should mark off two ways to escape. Doors should be your first exit option, and windows should be secondary. Before leaving the room you're in, make sure to touch the door before opening it. If it's hot, it means there could be a fire on the other side.

Leamy said everyone in your household should know how to open the windows in case you need to escape, and this includes children. She suggested practicing your fire escape plan and conducting family fire drills twice a year. You should also have a designated meeting place after everyone escapes.

Ayurvedic Diet For Weight Loss and Health

On a separate segment, Dr. Oz discussed Ayurvedic digestion secrets to minimize digestive problems and aid weight loss (up to 10 pounds in 10 days). Ayurvedic medicine is an ancient holistic healing practice from India that's based on treating a person’s body type, according to WebMD.

Dr. Oz's guest was obstetrician Dr. Nita Desai, who said you can prevent gas and bloating by drinking warm (instead of cold) water. Desai said the body’s digestive enzymes function better when you consume warm water, and suggested sipping warm water during meals to aid digestion. Better digestion aids weight loss and helps your body function optimally.

Another Ayurvedic digestion secret is to eat your biggest meal at lunch, as this will prevent heartburn. Dr. Desai said eating your largest meal between noon and 2 p.m. works with your body, which is primed for digesting food during these hours. Ideally, meals should not exceed the size of both your palms put together. Over-sized portions fuel indigestion and inflammation, which spur weight gain and disease.
