Dr. Mehmet Oz examined how the hidden fats in the foods you eat are making you gain weight on the Feb. 27 episode of the Dr. Oz Show ("The Fat Conspiracy: The Stealth Ingredient Hiding in Every Aisle").
Dr. Oz said there's a fat conspiracy being perpetuated by food manufacturers that's causing you to get addicted to unhealthy foods and snacks. "It's the ultimate reason you're putting on weight and can't stop," he said.
Dr. Oz's guest was investigative reporter Michael Moss, author of the Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us.
Moss said the food industry has spent millions of dollars in research concocting tasty, high-calorie snacks with the right combination of salt, sugar, and fat specifically engineered to drive addiction.
Michael called this perfect combination of salt, sugar and fat "mouth feel," which gives you pleasure sensations when you bite into a piece of crispy fried chicken or a rich, decadent chocolate cake. If you're addicted to a certain snack like potato chips or Twinkies, it is because countless hours of research were done to ensure this result.
Moss said adding unhealthy fats (like artery-clogging trans fats found in most processed junk foods) hit the pleasure centers in our brains like powerful drugs to induce addiction. "These hidden fats are the opiate of the food industry," said Dr. Oz.
In researching his book, Moss was surprised to learn that the executives at the major snack manufacturers often did not eat the food their companies produced themselves.
Dr. Oz said fat is what makes food taste good, which is why we're hardwired to crave it. But the hidden fats that fuel cravings for Hostess cupcakes, frozen pizza, and corn chips are different from healthy fats like those found in olive oil, avocados and salmon.
Dr. Oz recommended avoiding processed junk foods, and said when consuming dietary fat, pair it with a protein or vegetable to minimize blood-sugar spikes.
Anti-Aging Supplements Boost Memory, Prevent Cancer & Heart Disease
On a separate segment of the show, Dr. Oz recommended three anti-aging supplements that will improve memory, prevent cancer, and curb heart disease.
- Bacopa supplement for memory. Research shows the herb bacopa improves brain health and boosts memory. It has also been shown to reduce anxiety and stress.
- Baby aspirin to prevent cancer. Dr. Oz said over 50 studies have confirmed that baby aspirin (basically, low-dose aspirin) dramatically reduces your risk for cancer, especially ovarian cancer.
- Krill oil for heart health. Krill oil is a powerful antioxidant that supports heart, brain and joint health and is better absorbed than regular fish oil.
