Get ready to meet the best grain for weight loss: Freekah. Featured on Dr. Mehmet Oz's show recently, this grain contains multiple benefits that can provide you new ways to fuel your body, boost your weight loss and vary your meals.

Dr. Oz recommends freekah because it's exceptionally high in fiber and protein. As a result, you'll lose weight more easily because it curbs your cravings and keeps you full longer. In addition, freekah contains calcium, potassium and iron.

Where to find: Look in health food stores or find it online. It's also called green wheat. Examples include:

It's also featured in the book "Whole Grains for a New Generation: Light Dishes, Hearty Meals, Sweet Treats, and Sundry Snacks for the Everyday Cook" (click for details).

Dr. Oz featured several women who created their own recipes using the grain. We've included our own favorite below.

Freekeh Pilaf

Makes 4 servings

1 onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
3 tsp olive oil
1 cup uncooked freekeh
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground allspice
1 cup water or stock
1 handful each fresh mint, parsley and cilantro, roughly chopped
2 tbsp pine nuts, toasted

Place the onions and garlic in the oil in a heavy large pot. Sauté on medium heat stirring occasionally for 15 to 20 minutes.

Soak the freekeh in cold water for 5 minutes. Drain and rinse well.

Add the freekeh to the pot and then add the cinnamon and allspice and salt and pepper. Add the water and adjust salt to taste. Bring to a boil, the cover and reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove pan from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Remove lid, fluff with fork and place in a serving bowl.

Add the herbs and mix well. Top with pine nuts.
