Fox screencap

Dr. Mehmet Oz discussed health quirks and revealed nut butter recipes for weight loss and heart health on the June 20 of the Dr. Oz Show ("Am I Normal or Nuts? Your Health Quirks Explained").

Dr. Oz's guest was psychologist, Dr. Jen Hartstein, who explained that most health quirks are coping mechanisms for dealing with stress.

In one segment, Dr. Oz's guest was a young woman who picks at her scabs to the point of making herself bleed. She told Dr. Oz she had caused a scar on her neck the day before appearing on his show because she was nervous about meeting him and appearing on TV.

Dr. Hartstein said picking scabs is a normal habit that many people use to relieve stress. Dr. Oz agreed, saying that once you get past the pain of picking the scab, you actually feel a slight endorphin rush and a boost in serotonin. The positive emotions then reinforce this habit.

Scab-Picking and Earworms Are Related to Stress

Scab-picking is one of many self-harming practices people do to relieve stress, but can become a real problem if not checked. "Picking scabs can be a type of self-harm," said Karen Conterio, author of Bodily Harm.

In another segment, Dr. Oz had a guest who complained that she constantly has a song running through her head. Dr. Oz said this is also a common health quirk, but could be borderline "nuts." Dr. Hartstein said 90 percent of people experience earworms, which are repetitive thoughts or jingles running through their heads.

She said this is a common distraction mechanism for dealing with stress and anxiety. The problem occurs when the repetitive thoughts overwhelm you and keep you from being able to focus on other things. If this is the case, Dr. Oz recommended seeking help to get to the bottom of your anxiety.

On a separate segment, Dr. Oz discussed the health benefits of nut butters, which studies show promote weight loss, curb hunger, and help you live longer. Allison Fishman Task, the author of Cooking Light's Lighten Up, America, shared her favorite nut butter recipes.
