Dr. Mehmet Oz revealed the dangers of sugar addiction on the April 14 episode of the Dr. Oz Show. Dr. Oz said eating too much sugar causes diabetes, cancer, weight gain, fatty liver, and brain disorders. The worst part is, sugar is extremely addictive, so you may not even be aware how much you crave it.
"It's a dangerous drug destroying your health," said Dr. Oz. "Studies suggest it's as addictive as cocaine." Dr. Oz's guest was neuroscientist and addiction specialist Dr. Nicole Avena, author of "Why Diets Fail (Because You're Addicted to Sugar)."
Dr. Avena agrees that sugar is an addictive drug. "It's really the most abused drug in our society," she said. Dr. Oz said sugar secretly lurks in almost every food we eat, including chicken broth, mayonnaise, and cold cuts, which is why we've become programmed to crave it, whether we realize it or not.
"Sugar is eight times more addictive than cocaine,” said Dr. Mark Hyman, author of the 10-Day Detox Diet. "Sugar is the new nicotine. Sugar is the new fat — except fat is not addictive in the way that sugar is. And worse, sugar actually causes diabetes and obesity.”
Sugar Detox Diet Plan
- Go cold turkey. Dr. Oz said you can break your sugar addiction by following a three simple steps. First, she recommended going cold-turkey. Research shows that tapering off isn't effective because you're still feeding the reward centers in your brain every time you get a "hit" of sugar. This just keeps you addicted, she said.
- Manage withdrawal. Just like with drugs, you will have withdrawal symptoms from sugar detox, including irritability and crankiness. Accept that you will feel angry and moody, and realize this is a necessary step in your sugar detox. Dr. Oz said you'll notice a dramatic improvement by the fourth day.
- Manage your cravings. Dr. Oz said you need to break the association between the cue that sets off your sugar craving and the reward. For example, if you immediately reach for a chocolate bar when you're upset, recognize when you're vulnerable and take a walk or call a friend. Anything you can do to distract yourself when the urge hits is a step in the right direction.
The less sugar you eat, the less you'll crave it. Eliminating sugar from your diet isn't easy, but will pay huge dividends in the form of easy weight loss, glowing skin, and fewer mood swings. Internally, your body will "decay" less, stay youthful, and you'll dramatically reduce your risk of cancer, heart attacks, and Alzheimer's.
Kelsey Nixon Shares Asian Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe
On a separate segement of his show, Dr. Oz's guest was Cooking Channel star Kelsey Nixon, author of Kitchen Confidence, who shared her recipe for a healthy and delicious chicken noodle soup.
- 4-pound fully cooked rotisserie chicken from supermarket
- olive oil
- salt and pepper
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 chopped yellow onions
- 4 chopped carrots
- 4 chopped celery ribs
- 2 cloves minced garlic
- 8 oz stemmed, sliced shiitake mushrooms
- 16 cups low sodium chicken broth
- 4 tbsp white miso
- peeled, sliced ginger
- 2 1/2 cups wide egg noodles
- 1/2 cup chopped cilantro leaves
- Preheat oven on 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Season chicken with olive oil, salt and pepper.
- Roast to an internal temperature of 160 F for 30-35 minutes.
- Let chicken cool before shredding meat.
- Remove the bones and skin.
- Melt butter and cook onion with celery and carrots on medium high for 3 minutes.
- Add salt, pepper, and garlic, cooking another minute.
- Add in mushrooms and let soften for 8 minutes.
- Pour in broth with ginger and miso and simmer.
- Add egg noodles and continue to simmer for 10 minutes.
- Place chicken meat into soup and simmer.
- Remove ginger. Then add salt and pepper.
