Dr. Oz discussed how your body type affects your health and revealed effective anti-aging wrinkle creams on the May 9 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.
Doctors have long used the Body Mass Index to assess your risk for diabetes, heart disease, stroke and kidney disease, but Dr. Oz said your disease risk is more closely tied to your body shape.
For example, if you're apple-shaped (where most of your fat is concentrated in your abdominal area), you're have three times the risk of high blood pressure and kidney problems than someone's who's pear-shaped. Studies show waist size is a far more accurate predictor heart attacks than BMI.
By contrast, if you're pear-shaped (where fat in concentrated in your hip and thigh area), you may be at a greater risk for diabetes because the pancreas, which makes insulin, function less efficiently in pear-shaped people.
Whatever your body shape, nutritionist Haylie Pomroy, author of The Fast Metabolism Diet, said you can rev up your metabolism and accelerate weight loss by switching up your diet every two or three days. This confuses your body so it burns lots of calories.
Dr. Oz said the biggest mistake dieters make is to starve themselves, which only ends up slowing down your metabolism, resulting in minimal weight loss. Haylie outlined The Fast Metabolism Diet principles:
- Eat good fats to burn fat.
- Eat proteins to release stored fat.
- Eat carbs to reduce stress and calm the adrenal glands.
High Intensity Interval Training Melts Belly Fat
Another way to melt belly fat is to do high-intensity interval training (HIIT), which has been shown to burn fat faster than regular, low-intensity workouts.
Jogging for 45 minutes at a consistent middling pace won't challenge the body as much as shorter high-intensity interval training. A recent study at the University of Utah confirmed that exercise intensity is more important than duration when it comes to weight loss.
Dr. Michael Mosely, who lost 20 pounds by following the intermittent-fasting plan he detailed The Fast Diet, said you can get an effective fat-burning workout in under 7 minutes. The key to torching fat and accelerating weight loss is doing short bursts of intense exercise instead of long, drawn-out workouts.
Studies show that women who did 20 minutes of HIIT three times a week burned more belly fat than women who exercised at a moderate pace for 40 minutes three times a week. Mosley revealed his "fast workout" secrets in his new book, FastExercise: The Simple Secret of High-Intensity Training.
Anti-Aging Wrinkle Creams: Niacinamide Caffeine Cream and Hyaluronic Acid
On a separate segment, Dr. Oz's guest was dermatologist Dr. Doris Day, who recommended the following anti-aging wrinkle lotions to give you younger-looking skin:
Niacinamide caffeine eye cream. Dr. Day said the caffeine minimizes puffiness, while the vitamin B in niacinamide diminishes crow's feet and dark circles.
Hyaluronic acid serum. Hyaluronic acid promotes radiant skin by smoothing out fine lines and boosting collagen.
