Dr. Mehmet Oz tackled common health myths on the Aug. 1 episode of the Dr. Oz Show.

Dr. Oz said it's important to drink enough water every day, because it aids weight loss, digestion and makes your skin look better, but too much can be dangerous.

In extreme cases, coma or death can occur from water intoxication, which happens when your body becomes so diluted with water it triggers a sodium and electrolyte imbalance. Dr. Oz said you should listen to your body when it comes to hydration and don't go overboard.

Starve a Cold, Feed a Fever?

Next, Dr. Oz tackled the cliché of whether you should starve a cold and feed a fever. Dr. Oz said this is a myth because you should eat when you're sick to keep your immune system healthy.

But sometimes when you're sick, you lose your appetite because your body wants to direct its energy to healing instead of toward digestion, so don't force yourself to eat if you really don't want to.

Another interesting medical myth Dr. Oz discussed is lip balm addiction. Technically, lip balm addiction isn't a real medical condition, but there are many women who obsessively apply lip balm several times a day and won't go anywhere without it.

If you apply lip balm more than three times a day, have lip balm stashed in several places, and re-apply it even during a meal, you could have a minor addiction. Dr. Oz said you don't have to give up lip balm completely, but should avoid products that contain menthol, camphor or phenol.

He said the best chemical-free alternatives to commercial lip balms are shea butter, lanolin and coconut oil. Dr. Oz previously discussed the health benefits of coconut oil, an antioxidant-rich healthy fat that promotes weight loss, aids blood-sugar control, and enhances thyroid function to boost metabolism.
