Dr. Oz: Detox diet and Ayurvedic cleanse spur 10-pound weight loss in 10 days

Dr. Oz said detox cleanses and Ayurvedic diets can help you lose up to 10 pounds in 10 days on the June 13 episode of the Dr. Oz Show ("Ayurvedic Solutions for Your Biggest Health Complaints").

Dr. Oz said an Ayurvedic diet provides a simple road map for treating your body based on your dosha, or unique body type. Dr. Oz's guest was neurologist Dr. Trupti Gokani, who said there are three different body types: Kapha, Pitta, and Vata. Each body type has its own physical and emotional characteristics and function optimally on different diets.

Different Ayurvedic Cleanse for Different Body Types

The Kapha dosha is the largest body type, characterized by wide shoulders and hips, thick hair and lots of stamina. Dr. Oz said Kapha people should limit sugar, salt and fats from their diets and eat lots of vegetables. Dr. Gokani recommended that Kaphas take a holy basil supplement to clear up brain fog and congestion.

Pittas should take a good anti-inflammatory supplement that can boost the immune system like amla, which has potent antioxidant properties. A head massage with coconut oil can relieve Pitta's headaches and pain around the temples.

The third dosha is Vata, which is the thinnest of the three body types. Vatas tend to be small-framed and small-boned. Dr. Oz suggested Vatas consume ghee, or clarified butter, that's antioxidant-rich and promotes nerve and brain health.

Detox Diets For Weight Loss

On a separate segment, Dr. Oz's guest was Dr. Woodson Merrell, chairman of the department of integrative medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.

Dr. Merrell, author of The Detox Prescription, said regular detox cleanses can promote weight loss and rejuvenate your body.

Dr. Merrell said his 3-day detox diet can reduce stress, inflammation and enhance weight loss. His plan involves consuming various green juices throughout the day totaling 1,200 calories that combine protein, healthy fats and amino acids.

Dr. Oz's 3-Day Detox Diet Smoothie Meal Plan

  • Breakfast: Green smoothie
  • Snack: Glass of raw almond milk
  • Lunch: Cranberry-apple smoothie.
  • Afternoon snack: Sweet potato and apple smoothie
  • Dinner: Smoothie of pear and avocado.
  • Evening snack: Glass of raw walnut milk.
