Cleansing diets for weight loss have become increasingly popular in recent years. To help you find the right detox diet for your own body, Dr. Mehmet Oz explored the different types, from vegan to liquid, on his Monday talk show.
To help explore detox diets, Dr. Alejandro Junger served as the guest expert. He is the author of "Clean Eats: Over 200 Delicious Recipes to Reset Your Body's Natural Balance and Discover What It Means to Be Truly Healthy." Dr. Junger has created three cleanses: Five-Day Gut Flush Cleanse, Three-Day Liquid Cleanse and Seven-Day Vegan Cleanse.
Dr. Junger suggests using the gut flush detox diet if you have bloating around your middle. Designed to boost weight loss and repair damage done by sugar, fat and alcohol, this cleanse involves liquid meals or shakes in the morning and at night. You must avoid all grains at your mid-day meal as well as all forms of sugar.
Have you gained weight all over and feel sluggish? Dr. Junger recommends his three-day liquid cleanse, which involves sipping shakes in place of solid meals as detailed in his book "Clean Gut: The Breakthrough Plan for Eliminating the Root Cause of Disease and Revolutionizing Your Health."
For protein, Dr. Junger recommends adding at least 14 to 20 grams of plant protein to your shakes. And as a supplement, he suggests taking milk thistle 150 mg once a day.
If you suffer from inflammation, Dr. Junger has created a seven-day vegan cleanse that also can help you lose weight. You must eliminate all animal products and gluten. Eat vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, quinoa, avocado and coconut.
Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan of Dr. Junger's Clean program. "I can report that it worked wonders," she declared about the detox plan "Clean -- Expanded Edition: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself."
In addition to detox diets, Dr. Oz and Dr. Junger recommend consuming fermented foods for your health and to boost weight loss. One popular option is yogurt - but choose Greek yogurt without added sugar for the best benefits.
Other examples of fermented foods are sauerkraut, pickles and kimchi. High in probiotics, fermented foods help maintain good bacteria and are helpful for leaky gut, IBS and weight loss.
What if you dislike all those types of fermented foods? Dr. Junger suggests taking a multi-spectrum probiotic (50 billion count) once a day.
