Wish you could find a new way to outsmart your carbohydrate cravings and conquer your hunger? If your appetite is winning your battle of the bulge, find out about Dr. Mehmet Oz's new secret weight loss weapon to help you drop pounds. We've got the skinny on this all-natural appetite suppressant here, based on Dr. Oz's talk show and blog.
5-HTP is a chemical compound that your body produces as it makes serotonin. Dr. Oz says that it's an important hormone for regulating your mood and is considered by many doctors to be the best natural appetite suppressant. In addition, some studies show that 5-HTP can even ease headaches, insomnia, depression and fibromyalgia.
How it works: By taking 5-HTP supplements, you can improve your mood, suppress your hunger and boost your weight loss naturally. Dr. Oz notes that as your serotonin levels increase, you experience a decrease in hunger and you feel fuller faster. In one study, women consumed fewer carbohydrates without even trying. "Experts and researchers agree that 5-HTP works best for those who constantly crave food around the clock – especially carbs," adds Dr. Oz.
Dr. Oz offers these guidelines on trying it:
- Start with 50mg doses, three times per day.
- Look for established brands. Examples include Now Foods 5-HTP 50mg (click for details), Jarrow Formulas 5-HTP 50mg and Natural Factors Stress-Relax 5-HTP 50mg.
- Take it 20-30 minutes before meals.
- If you don’t think 50 mg is working, speak with your doctor about potentially increasing the dose.
- Limit your supplementation to 12 weeks maximum.
In addition, Dr. Oz notes:
Because it’s a naturally occurring compound in the body, 5-HTP is mostly safe for short-term use (up to 12 weeks). However, those with existing gastrointestinal problems should be cautious and speak to a physician, as there are reports of gastrointestinal side effects, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Also, avoid taking this supplement if you’re already taking antidepressants (such as an SSRI or MAOI) or are seeing a mental health specialist for severe depression or bipolar disorder. 5-HTP has been known to increase suicidal ideation.
If you are pregnant of breastfeeding, you should not use 5-HTP.
