You are what you eat, right? Wrong, says Ramani Durvasula, author of "You Are WHY You Eat: Change Your Food Attitude, Change Your Life" (click to order). She recently served as a guest expert on Dr. Mehmet Oz's talk show to explore the different hunger types and how understanding your own type can enhance your health and happiness.
- You're a sensory type if...the smell, sight, or sound of food sets you off and makes you want to eat. What to do: Pre-load with protein if you're going to dangerous areas like a food court mall or try aromatherapy by sniffing an essential oil such as Now Foods Grapefruit Oil (click for details).
- You're an emotional type if...you find yourself eating in response to a feeling instead of to hunger. What to do: Try a fragrant tea like Numi Organic Tea Rooibos, Herbal Teasan (click for details).
- You're a habitual hunger type if...you eat because it is time to eat. What to do: Learn to listen to your body rather than obeying a clock.
Regardless of your hunger type, try the apple test, says Ramani. "The next time you are thinking you are hungry – ask yourself, “Will an apple handle my hunger right now?” If you are really hungry – even if an apple isn’t exactly what you want – it will seem as good an option as any and you will welcome it." Don't want the apple and feel as if you "need" a milkshake or box of French fries? Then see the tips for your hunger type.
