There has been no let up in tensions between Tibetans and the Chinese authorities in 2013. The situation has become very desperate for Tibetans with Dr Lobsang Sangay now urging more involvement of the international community to try to help Tibetans cope with their situation. Today, Kan. 29, 2013, the Tibet Sun has reported, India should treat Tibet as core issue: Sangay.
The Tibetan government-in-exile is seeking the international community’s intervention against “continued repression of Tibetan people” and has urged India to treat Tibet as a core issue in its talks with China. Dr Lobsang Sangay, who is the elected political leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile, has told reporters that 99 self-immolation incidents had taken place in Tibet since 2009. Sangay, along with Penpa Tsering, who is speaker of the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, has said the situation was “grave and extremely serious and deserves attention and support of the international community”.
Recently family members of those who had committed self-immolations have been victimized in Tibet. Sangay has pointed out that Tibetans were resorting to “drastic way of protest through self-immolation” and the government-in-exile is appealing to discourage such action. Sangay has also noted that China was not allowing international media to visit Tibet and to report accurately on the self-immolations. He has commented, “International community ought to speak out against continued repression of Tibetan people. We want to solve the issue peacefully through dialogue.”
