Continued self-immolations by Tibetans protesting harsh conditions under Chinese rule has generated increasing anxieties among Buddhists. A recent inspirational comment by the Prime Minister of the Tibetan government in exile, Dr Lobsang Sangay, insisting democracy is imperative to resolve the Tibet issue, has widespread support among Buddhists in Syracuse who overall are also firmly in support of democracy.
Rajeshwari K has reported for The Tibet Post International "Only Democracy Can Resolve The Tibet Issue,’ – Lobsang Sangay." On January 12th at a public lecture in India titled 'Democracy in Exile: The case of Tibet,' Dr Lobsang Sangay said "Only democracy can resolve the issue of Tibet." With praise for Indian democratic traditions, Dr Sangay has stated that the Dharamsala-based Central Tibetan Administration has been inspired to follow the same path.
Dr Sangay also spoke about Tibetans having learned many essential traits from India's democratic system and implementing the lessons in exile. He cited examples of committing to resolve social issues through dialogue and of encouraging vibrant yet ethical media. Dr Sangay has also stated that the middle way approach to seeking genuine autonomy chosen by the Central Tibetan Administration is a 'mutually beneficial' solution to the China-Tibet issue. His Holiness the Dalai Lama also supports this middle way approach to seeking autonomy for Tibet.
