Being an entrepreneur is more than a 24/7 job. For many women who decide to start their own business, their work hours can easily consume their schedule. Between managing clients and marketing for new ones, one of the most important things for any business owner to keep in mind is preventing burnout. For Kris Katsuko Oster PhD, feeling fulfilled and satisfied in one's life as an entrepreneur is a key ingredient for avoiding the negative effects of burnout. Dr. Oster believes that happiness and fulfillment generally mean less stress and better health. Her upcoming workshop "Bewitch" offers some tips to help female business owners get to that place of contentment in their personal and professional lives. She explains in detail in the following interview what her workshop has to offer.
What is your Bewitch workshop all about? Why did you decide to make it donation based?
The Bewitch workshop popped into my brain in late June. So many of my beloved tribe members who are entrepreneurs were talking about how hard it was to get people on their lists to buy their stuff, or even just sign up for free webinars and workshops.
The other question or concern I see a lot is about list building … and my answer to that is to really focus on building a loving and lasting relationship with your audience. We’ll focus on that throughout Bewitch.
There are a lot of offerings out there in the online world and my belief is that to stand out you need to confidently DECLARE your core message and sprinkle your personality into your offers and sales pages.
I decided to make it donation-based because I did a fundraiser last year at this time for Sea Save Foundation. I plan to do it every year as a way to give back to the planet, and Mother Ocean, for sustaining all of us so abundantly.
How did you come to select the Sea Save as the organization you wanted to support with this workshop?
I found Sea Save last year. I approached them about being my non-profit partner and they were such an amazing group of people. They understand the value of grassroots efforts of each individual and how that power can be harnessed for good.
Why are people afraid to shine their light even though it would be the one thing that would turn their business around and attract the kind of clients they want?
We humans are socially conditioned to want to please, follow the rules and not stand out too much. And, there’s the survival instinct to want to be accepted by your tribe. To be rejected, feels like a death sentence … even when it’s not.
So, shining your light is a bit of a scary business. Especially in business, where we’re under the scrutiny of the public eye.
Too much-ness is something that many of us have been put down for in the past, especially in childhood and in our personal relationships: i.e, “you’re too … emotional / sensitive / loud / fat / skinny / quiet / fast /slow.”
In Bewitch we are unlearning a lot of beliefs we’ve held about ourselves that have come from external sources. We’re going to back to our own Divine Source. It never left us and is always there for us to rediscover.
You have said that happiness and fulfillment generally means less stress and better health, so how does Bewitch and your other workshops help people get there in their business lives?
I have two mottos:
1. Marketing is a golden opportunity for healing.
2. Entrepreneurship is the quest for pleasure that has only good consequences. (this comes out of a saying by the philosopher Epicurus.)
When we use these two principles in our marketing and business-building efforts we can realize our goals and dreams, our passions and desires, to be beauty, be happy and be fulfilled.
Decisions are made differently too. We say “no” to things that don’t bring us joy and channel our vital energy into what we love. And, what we focus on we get MORE of.
What are the leading causes of burnout and how do you guide entrepreneurs to strategies that cultivate self-care to prevent burnout?
The leading cause of burnout is lack of celebration and fun, and too much time spent staring at a computer screen. It’s so important to ceremonialize and gamify goal setting and goal getting.
I also take one 4-hour block of time 1 day per week to do whatever the heck I want! No rules or to-do lists on that day. I can nap, read fiction, watch movies (or my fave show on Netflix, which is Lost Girl right now), sit on the beach and meditate, call my friends …
Once fall hits and the days grow shorter I take even more time to get proper rest. I do not go on Facebook or any social media on Tues and Thurs. I minimally check email. You need online sabbaticals from time to time!
Do women entrepreneurs need special support for their health and wellness that is distinct from men? If so, what aspects of Bewitch are especially helpful to women who are running their own business?
You know, I’ve worked with so few men over the past few years that it’s hard to answer this question. Men are totally invited to join the feminine majority in the workshop. So far 25 women are signed up.
I imagine that there is a difference but since I generally only work with women, I don’t know.
The Bewitch workshop is focused on showing the world or one's market the real you. Why is this so important for profits and well-being in an entrepreneur's life?
People do not buy your stuff because it sounds great or looks good. I know this is hard to believe. People make decisions irrationally and based on how they feel about something.
People buy your stuff because they like you, or love you, and/or want to be like you … they believe in you and trust you. People ultimately invest their hard-earned money on you because of what you stand for.
In these 5 weeks of bewitching business-building magic you will learn:
Week 1. Come Hither.
I’ll walk you through a framework to create your scrumptious, most desirable customer character sketch. It will take your ideal customer avatar to a deeper, more concrete level.
Myths and dreams, just like the seasons and wheel of the year, are cyclical. We will play together during this 5-week period in a circle of phases that I’m sure you’re already familiar with: Birth, Growth, Decline, Death + Rebirth. When we honor these cycles in ourselves and our biz, we are also honoring timeless traditions from cultures all over the world. We’ll look at stories that represent all of these phases and see how they intersect with our customer’s experiences of our work.
Materials will be released on Fri. Oct 4 :: in conjunction with the new moon in Libra.(Hello! Libra is all about cultivating harmonious relationships. This is exactly what you’ll be doing to get the customers you crave.)
Sat. Oct. 5 :: kick off call at 10:30am PST. Recorded for anyone who is unable to attend.
Week 2. Shadow Play.
This is one of my favorite pastimes … imaginal play with those parts of me that are “unacceptable” and so damn bewitching! We’ll create collages/vision boards or Pinterest boards that show the world a different view of ourselves. We’ll pair up and interview each other’s shadow characters too!
The Shadow is just another frame to talk about the dormant energy that lies within us. Untapped. Lo and behold, your shadow is often the honey that attracts your most raving fans!
Materials released on Oct. 11th.
Week 3. Your Witches’ Brew.
This week you’ll plan out your irresistible offerings for the next six months. And, I’ll give you a framework to map out what makes you different from “everyone else.”
‘Cause, you’re not everyone. Not even close.
What is your heart crying out to do? Travel more? Teach? Sing? Dance? Start a revolution (helll yeah!). Yes, Bewitching One. You’ll figure it out … and, bring so much good juju onto the planet.
Materials released on Oct. 18th.
Week 4. Seduction of the Highest Order.
First, we’ll dive into cultural and personal stories around the Big 3: Love, Power and Money.
Beware: Client attraction will take on a whole new meaning.
Get ready to rock your marketing content. What are the best mediums to put your message out into the world that will reach your ideal customers + make you feel in your element? We’ll wade through it all … newsletters, videos, podcasting, guest blogging, social media strategies, live events, PR and joint ventures.
Materials released on Oct. 25th.
Week 5. Through the Threshold + Beyond the Veil.
Think Rituals. Celebrations. Time to send your desire vibration into the Otherworlds.
Since we’ll be in the thick of a Mercury Retrograde period (in Scorpio no less; the sign of transformation and power), we will be reviewing our own myths and doing deep work around resources. How will you optimize the power you already have to get you and your work out into the world?
What have you inherited from your Ancestors? What can you thank them for? What old patterns and conditioning can you release this year?
Materials released on Nov. 1 :: in conjunction with Dia de Los Muertos/All Saint’s Day
