Yesterday GNC congratulated Dr. Joseph C. Maroon, neurosurgeon and head of GNC’s advisory board, on completing his Fifth Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii on October 12, 2013. He competed in the 70-74 age division and finished the 2.4 mile ocean swim, 112 mile biking along an active volcano and a 26.2 mile run through a lava field in less than 17 hours. Dr. Maroon is the neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
"On behalf of all of us at GNC, I want to congratulate Joe for his amazing achievement. He is a profound example of what an individual can accomplish, whether in sports or in simply maintaining a healthy lifestyle, at any age. In doing so, Joe truly demonstrates the power of the Live Well message!" Joseph Fortunato, GNC's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer
"Hearing the roar of the crowd upon crossing the finish line for my 5th Ironman in Kona was an amazing experience," said Dr. Maroon. "But more important to me, both as an athlete and as an individual, was the satisfaction of knowing that my training and determination to compete at this level had paid off. I can only hope that my experience will serve as a model for others who strive every day to achieve their personal best!"
