Dr. Joe Martin back for ‘AMC’ revival; Ray MacDonnell will make guest appearance

Ray MacDonnell, who portrayed Dr. Joe Martin, one of the original characters of “All My Children,” is returning for the Prospect Park/Online Network revival of “AMC,” Soap Opera Network announced on Feb. 23. In 2005 Ray MacDonnell received a Life Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmy’s. MacDonnell and Dr. Joe retired in 2010 when “AMC” moved filming of the soap from New York City to Los Angeles.

Dr. Joe Martin is scheduled to make a return visit to Pine Valley, the fictional town in which “All My Children” is set. At this time it is not known if Lee Meriwether will return as his wife, Ruth Martin. The character of Ruth Martin was originally portrayed by Mary Fickett. Fickett was put on recurring status in the mid-1990 and was eventually replaced by Lee Meriwether in 1996. Meriwether was fired in 1999 and Fickett returned on recurring status as Ruth Martin, retiring again in 2000. Meriwether was rehired in 2002. Mary Fickett died on Sept. 8, 2011 at the age of 83 from complications due to Alzheimer’s.

Michael E. Knight, who portrayed Dr. Joe Martin’s son Thaddeus “Tad” Martin in a recent interview with Soap Opera Digest said, “I think the Martins are going to be well-represented with Cady [McClain] and I hear Ray. I’m sorry if Ricky [Paull Goldin, ex-Jake Martin] won’t be [returning]. I’m blessed, personally, that the Martins are going to be represented.”

Also returning for the Internet revival of “All My Children” are:

  • Julia Barr as Brooke English
  • Cady McClain as Dixie Martin
  • Jill Larson as Opal Cortlandt
  • Thorsten Kaye as Zach Slater
  • Debbi Morgan as Dr. Angela Hubbard
  • Darnell William as Jesse Hubbard
  • Eden Riegel as Bianca Montgomery
  • Vincent Irizarry as Dr. David Hayward
  • Lindsay Hartley as Cara Martin
  • Jordi Vilasuso as Griffin Castillo

No word yet if the following “All My Children” favorites will return for the reboot but Online Network is expected to announce more casting details in the coming weeks:

  • Susan Lucci as Erica Kane
  • Michael E. Knight as Tad Martin
  • Walt Willey as Jackson Montgomery
  • Alicia Minshew as Kendall Hart Slater

David Canary, who portrayed both Adam and Stuart Chandler, retired in 2010. “AMC” killed off Stuart Chandler and Adam remarried Brooke English and the two left Pine Valley together to live happily ever after. It is rumored that David Canary, like Ray MacDonnell, may return for a guest appearance as Adam Chandler on the Prospect Park reboot of “All My Children.”
