In celebration of Black History Month, Northport K-8 School recently presented a wonderful program that included Dr. Dwight Dawkins as guest speaker. Dr. Dwight Dawkins, MD is a family doctor practicing in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie, FL. During and after his speaking presentation in the school cafeteria, (culinary students under the direction of instructor Rachel Ellsworth, worked along with cafeteria staff to provide a tempting Southern luncheon for all teachers and staff) Dr. Dawkins encouraged students to do their best and to have high aspirations.
Port St. Lucie High School Jaguar Battalion added color and gallantry to the program with an honor guard, and Northport choral students from all grade levels as they sang songs of jubilation such as the “National Anthem,” “Elijah,” and “Tribute to Martin Luther King”. Students also listened to a Black History moment on the morning announcements showcasing contributions of Black Americans.
As a conclusion to the programming (as stated in Lucie Links Newsletter), students and teachers were encouraged to dress in costumes and clothing from their own heritage. Northport K-8 School honors the heritage of the entire community and celebrates “Many Cultures, One Country!” A Special “thank you” went to guidance counselor Diane Reynolds for organizing the multicultural salute to Black History!
