There’s a grass-roots movement gaining momentum across the US to draft Dr. Ben Carson as a candidate for the Presidency in 2016. The movement began after he spoke in 2013 at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC. Dr. Carson has a story that reads like a Hollywood movie. In fact a TV movie was made from his autobiographical book “Gifted Hands- the Ben Carson Story”.
Dr. Carson and his brother were raised by their mother after their parent’s divorce. He graduated from Yale University and received his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He became, at age thirty-three, the youngest director ever of a major division at Johns Hopkins Hospital- Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery.
He made history again in 1987 when he led a surgical team in a twenty-two hour operation to separate conjoined twins that were joined at the back of their skulls. He retired in 2013 with many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom- the highest civilian award in the United States.
Dr. Carson also made headlines in 2013 after his speech at the Prayer Breakfast. The speech was greeted with some controversy since it was viewed as critical of President Obama and his policies while the President sat ten feet away from Carson. As the controversy swirled around him, Dr. Carson responded with his typical no-nonsense candor, “Somebody has to be courageous enough to stand up to the bullies.”
With his calm, reserved demeanor and his reasoned, articulate positions on many of the issues driving the political discussion in the US, Dr. Carson has become somewhat of a national sensation. Viewed as a Traditionalist, he has been celebrated by Conservatives while he strikes fear in the hearts of Progressives.
Carson took a major step toward a potential Presidential run recently when he announced the formation of a PAC- One Nation. The Washington Times reported Friday, August 1st that in addition to One Nation, Carson has asked Tony Giles, a Houston businessman, to serve as campaign chair should the Dr. run.
The mainstream media will ignore Dr. Carson as long as they can- he represents an existential threat to all they stand for. Social media and cable news are currently the main sources for spreading the word about Dr. Carson. In spite of this, momentum is growing for a Carson candidacy and, as noted above, Dr. Carson himself appears to be considering a run if it appears he could make a difference.
2016 could see a situation almost unique in American history: a candidate for the Presidency with no previous political experience. If it happens you can be sure of one thing: Progressives will be apoplectic. This guy is the real deal, soft-spoken, honest, brilliant and conservative- just the thing to drive the left nuts.
There is a Facebook page for those interested in joining the “Draft Ben Carson” movement. I suggest you check it out and see for yourself what many are discovering about Dr. Carson.
Full disclosure: I have been a fan of Dr. Carson’s since that Prayer Breakfast speech. I also met him at the Milwaukee airport where I implored him to run. He was friendly, kind and gracious which served to reinforce the high opinion I already had of him. I also have offered my services to the Draft Ben Carson committee.
RUN BEN RUN!
