DP2A – the answer to the Couch Potato Blues.

Have you spent too many weekends on the sofa wishing you were doing something a bit more exciting?

Do you just need a nudge in the right direction?

The solution is ‘Detroit Passport to the Arts’ – or ‘DP2A’ as it is known around town. For prices starting at a mere $139, you can launch an adventure of amazing discovery that leads you to six distinct performances by metro Detroit performers.

DP2A is designed to attract new audiences to metro Detroit's cultural institutions by breaking down barriers that often surround the world of arts and culture, such as high cost, perceptions of elitism, and lack of familiarity with the art forms. This year, DP2A will introduce 400 passport holders to Detroit's cultural offerings.

‘DP2A offers great seats and an event with drinks and appetizers, all at a low price. Owning a Passport is a cost effective way to experience arts and culture in Detroit, plus Passport holders enjoy the fun of going to each event with the same group,’ says DP2A Vice President for Marketing & Development, Natalie Bruno.

The successful DP2A program marks its third season with a lineup certain to please the veteran patrons and newbies alike.  Destination performances for 2011-2012 season include:

  1. Tchaikovsky No. 5 and classical guitarist Xuefei Yang with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra on November 4, 2011
  2. Holiday Brass with Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings on December 4, 2011 at St. Paul Cathedral Church in Detroit
  3. The Oscar-Nominated Shorts at the Detroit Film Theatre on February 23, 2012
  4. The Hilberry Theatre’s performance of Summer and Smoke by Tennessee Williams on March 24, 2012
  5. George Bizet's The Pearl Fishers at the Michigan Opera Theatre, featuring the acclaimed Eisenhower Dance Ensemble, on April 21, 2012
  6. The 2012 Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival - White Nights: A Celebration of Russian and Scandinavian Music on June 16

Each performance will be paired with an event designed to inform and inspire audiences. For example, following Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, Passport holders will enjoy food and drink from the setting of the opera, Sri Lanka. Passport holders can look forward to a glamorous evening of walking the red carpet with an Old Hollywood theme at the Detroit Film Theatre destination. Other plans include an ugly sweater party following Holiday Brass with DCWS and a Spain-themed fête after listening to classical guitar at the DSO.

New for this year, DP2A introduces add-on excursions  – additional performances that passport holders can include in their package for an additional fee. The first excursion is to the University Musical Society where audiences will enjoy Messiaen's From the Canyons to the Stars. The second is to Mosaic Youth Theatre, which will perform Now That I Can Dance - Motown 1962

Passports start at a modest $139 and can be purchased online or by phone at 248-559-2095. DP2A passports have sold out every year, so those desiring a passport should purchase early to guarantee a spot.

A new option is offered this year for those wishing to support the program. The Patron Passport is available at $500. In addition to supporting DP2A, Patron Passport holders premium seating, parking, recognition and excursion tickets.
