Forty-four people were transported to hospitals Saturday night after a street party turned violent in the Southern California community of Isla Vista, the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s County Office announced.

About 15,000 people were in the streets celebrating spring break at the University of California at Santa Barbara when violence broke out at 9:30 p.m. on Del Playa Drive, according to the statement.

The party was declared an unlawful assembly after a UC Santa Barbara police officer was hit on the head with a backpack filled with alcohol bottles, according to the statement.

Five sheriff’s deputies were reported injured as the crowd was dispersed with unspecified chemical agents and projectiles made of foam.

Deputies suffered a variety of injuries, including being hit in the face with bricks and additional head injuries caused by alcohol bottles.

An unspecified number of law enforcement vehicles were set ablaze, and street signs were ripped up, sheriff’s reports say.

The disturbances resulted in about 100 arrests.
