A delightful signal of Spring in Oklahoma City is the annual Festival of the Arts http://www.artscouncilokc.com/festival-of-the-arts , and 2014 is no exception. OKC Festival of the Arts has posted notices for two specialized opportunities for youth to share at the event.
One is the young visual artists tent, where a limited number of youth will be asked to host their own creations, displayed for sale. http://www.artscouncilokc.com/youth-art-sale
This opportunity does three things.
1.) Create a bid of their work : photograph and enter their completed prospective, so they have to get the a.) forms to enter, create b.) photographic portfolio and c.)be able in writing and in person be able to explain the items, technique and completed project.
2.) Gives them a chance to be exposed to the process of being a professional artist, in a tent, at an event and fielding the interested, disinterested and pesky. :)
3.) Show the need for a business plan: pricing per item, ability to write a sales ticket, plan to pack the item for departure with the customer and a business card or flyer to promote their work beyond the event to those buyers or other artists, young and old. Some youth even prepare a webpage as an ongoing sales portal.
(Oklahoma does a great job of supporting visual artists, and also has an under 30 coalition. http://www.ovac-ok.org/ and 12x12, a fundraiser last fall that sold donated 12x12 original works of art to raise money to support and promote the visual arts in Oklahoma. )
The other primary youth offering at the OKC Festival of the Arts is Youth talent show "Festival Idol, 2014" http://www.artscouncilokc.com/festival-idol. This has performance options of all kinds for youth to show off skills in drama, dancing and song and vocal music performance. Some groups do a mix of things, so be sure to take a look at what is called for, and where one's skills might fit.
OKC Festival of the Arts 2104 is an event without admissions costs. It is held Downtown in the grounds of the Myriad Gardens http://www.myriadgardens.com/, a formal public garden with various attributes, including a children's garden and play space, various stages and amphitheatres, waterways and waterfalls, bridges and various botanical offerings. The property is built out for wheelchair accessibility.
The general festival offers special hands on activities for youth and families. Last year, the hot spot was the completely unforgettable controlled BURN of the RAKU kilns.
http://www.examiner.com/article/shortlisting-the-2013-downtown-oklahoma-... About midway through this slide show, little girls at the red table glazed their pots, and then the professional pottery staff set them in the superhot kiln, and on to wood shavings to get that final GLOW. Make, bake, take. In a 3 hour trip, the project was done before the family left the property.Plenty of other things to do, see, hear and eat before dropping back by to collect their artistic effort. Ambitious success OKC Festival of the Arts typically leaves visitors saying: "More! More!"
