Downtown Milwaukee making the top 15 list for emerging cities

Announced Monday on Forbes website that downtown Milwaukee has made the list as one of the most emerging cities in the upper Midwest. This title was earned for increasing the downtown population by 26% percent from 2000 through 2013 in the downtown area in comparison to the city of Milwaukee, which has been indicating an overall decline. The effort begun in 1988 with the River-Walk initiative by passing zoning changes in order to help local home builder and developers increase the housing erections in and around the downtown area. After the 2002 $45 million government funding to demolish the mile-long elevated Park East freeway, and turning it into a landscaped boulevard, the per-acre land value has increased 180% percent in value by the year 2006. In addition the job market has reflected a 4% increase from the year 2000, and the median household income rose 38% between the year 2000 and 2010, which is an 8% over the 2% overall increase within the city of Milwaukee according to a Milwaukee Downtown organization.

Major factors such as the long tradition of the well-known Milwaukee culture of the booming brewing industry for Miller Brewing, and the historic Milwaukee Brewery that is one of the oldest brew houses which is still in operation around the Midwest region, the various seasonal festivals such as Summerfest that has earned Milwaukee nicknames such as the “City of Festival” and the “Music Capital of the World”, State Fair at State Fair Park which is also a home to many other festive activities, and themes that celebrate the city of Milwaukee rich historic and diverse cultures.

According to Forbes, a major factor for business and large organization to relocate is the pool of collage-educated professionals between the age of 25-34 available or welling to relocate to the desired demographic. The Milwaukee area and Midwest climate create the ideal demographic in addition to the available careers and opportunities, the relative lower commute time in comparison to major cities like neighboring Chicago, the affordable diverse neighborhoods and housing, and various recreational areas available nearby, and the excellent schools in and around the city make it an ideal place to earn such spot.
