Even though the Christmas on Main event that Forney City officials had planned this year was cancelled due to an ice storm, it did not stop the annual tree lighting ceremony. The lighting took place on Sunday, December 15.
Mayor Darren Rozell welcomed the crowd and said that although they were very disappointed the Christmas on Main event was iced out, the 2014 event would be something to look forward to for the community. Rhea Elementary's Honor Choir performed multiple Christmas songs on stage in downtown Forney. They entertained the audience for about 30 minutes and did a wonderful job getting everyone into the Christmas spirit.
The winners of the Best Decorated Business in Downtown were announced by Joe Dan McBeth. Third place went to Bow Wood Florist & Gifts, second place was awarded to Allstate Insurance, and the first place prize went to Flower Basket.
Mayor Rozell took the stage again and insisted that rather than himself pulling the switch to light the downtown Christmas tree, he wanted Assistant City Manager Gina Nash and Special Events Coordinator Alexa Tiesman to have the honor. Both had worked hard to put together this year's Christmas festival. With a flip of the giant red switch, the large tree was lit up. At the same time, white lights came on decorating the downtown area and snow from a snow machine was pumped out into the crowd of onlookers.
