Oh boy, just what's needed for a cold mid-winter day? Why, a dip in the lake, of course! Especially if it's for a good cause, and this one in Brighton is.
Downtown Brighton businesses will, for the second year, collaborate to raise money for the Special Olympics Michigan by hosting four days of Polar Plunge activities
Feb. 21- 24. The actual “plunge” will take place Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. behind Brighton High School. These events will coincide with individual fundraising efforts in many of the downtown businesses.
Proceeds from these events will go to support year-round sports training and athletic competition for more than 18,600 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Michigan.
Last year, the plunge itself drew almost 100 icy swimmers and roughly 500 spectators, while the merchant events raised between $9,000-$10,000 for the charity. The goal this year is set even higher. Lindsay Palizzi, chairperson of the Polar Plunge planning committee and owner of Downtown Main Martini Bar & Grille said she would like to see an even larger check to hand over to the organization.
“This is such a cool charity, and I love the fact that they brought this to Downtown Brighton,” Palizzi said. “It is definitely a win-win for everyone. It exposes our community to a great group of people and raises money for a great organization.”
Polar Plunge events include the Downtown Brighton Polar Bear Pub & Shop Crawl
Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. where visitors are encouraged to donate, shop and dine for a chance to win prizes. Also, the Polar Plunge Feb. 23 at 1:00 p.m. where spectators will enjoy an array of plungers dressed up in crazy costumes. To wrap up the week, the After Glow Fashion Show at Downtown Main Martini Bar & Grille will take place Feb. 24 from 5 - 9 p.m. Visitors can participate in a silent auction and watch local celebrities model in cutting-edge fashions provided by Downtown Brighton merchants.
