Fans of “Downton Abbey” may have thought the carnage of cast departures was over, but now there is word that one more familiar face will be gone for season 4. Entertainmentwise broke the “Downton Abbey” spoiler news March 1 that Siobhan Finneran, who plays Sarah O'Brien, has decided she will not return.
The show already lost Sybil and Matthew when their portrayers chose not to sign on for “Downton Abbey” season 4, and now it seems O'Brien is following suit. Siobhan Finneran confirms that she isn't returning, but she says that Sarah O'Brien was a great character to play. Most viewers would say that they saw plenty of opportunity ahead yet for the character of O'Brien, so this departure is disappointing.
TV Line shares that “Downton Abbey” spoilers indicate O'Brien's exit will happen during the six-month time jump between seasons 3 and 4. While fans may be hoping for a big story surrounding this one, creator Julian Fellowes has previously indicated that a servant leaving is really no big job, as they would just get another job. It seems fans hoping that O'Brien's past bad deeds would catch up with her will be disappointed.
What do you think of the idea of the show skipping ahead six months as season 4 begins? Will you miss having Siobhan Finneran on the show? Are you disappointed that Sarah O'Brien's exit won't be played up by Fellowes?
