Filming for season five is already well underway, having started in February while the fourth season was still airing in the United States. Show creator Julian Fellowes began working on the scripts for the new eight episode season before the holiday season. Returning cast members include Robert (Hugh Bonneville), Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith), Mary (Michelle Dockery), Tom (Allen Leech) and Edith (Laura Carmichael).

Several new characters will be visiting Downton this season, including actor Richard E. Grant, who will play Simon Bricker. He will be a guest at Downton who is visiting the Grantham family. Actress Anna Chancellor will be playing Lady Anstruther, the lady of the house where Jimmy Kent was previously employed. Rade Sherbedgia will play a refugee from the 1917 Russian revolution. Several guest stars from season four will also be making appearances in the new season. A casting call for twin girls went out earlier this year, so it's likely Edith's daughter will also appear in the new season.

The fifth season will not be without its drama, with cast member Allen Leech revealing that he is "saddened" by information be discovers in the first episode of the new season. Lady Mary will still be undecided in the romance department, but photos from the set have revealed a kiss between her and Lord Gillingham. There not be a time jump between the seasons, as Fellowes has mentioned previously that the series will be staying set in the 1920s for the rest of the show.

No official release date has been set for season five, but the last four season have premiered in the United Kingdom in September and aired until the beginning of November, with the Christmas Special airing on December 25. The fifth season will premiere in the United States in early 2015.
